After rising to fame on the popular comedy Married with Children, also becoming a pop culture celeb in the ’90s, actress Christina Applegate has garnered critical praise for her strength and versatility as an actress in theater, film and television. She has appeared in a string of successful movies including The Sweetest Thing, Wonderland, Surviving Christmas and Anchorman. However, it’s her role as Samantha Newly in the hit comedy Samantha Who? that has thrust Christina back to the public eye to showcase her acting talent.
With Samantha Who? Season 2 now out on DVD as of August 25, Christina reveals her thoughts on the second season of the show and her character plus what it’s like to be an inspiration to women around the world after her battle with breast cancer.
Is it fun to play a mean girl like Samantha Newly?
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE: It definitely is fun to play a mean girl. Samantha gets away with so much because of her confidence and the way she looks. I get very exhausted playing her because she has so many different sides to her character, but it’s also very fun. I really enjoy working on the show.
How are things changing for Samantha in the second season?
[Samantha Who?] APPLEGATE: The first season explored the idea of someone trying to find out who she really was. We take our past, our history and our experiences with us wherever we go, but this character didn’t know anything about her life before the accident. She had a lot of exploring to do in the first season – but now she’s two years old. She’s had enough experiences to see what her interests are on the surface level, but we delve a little deeper in season two.
What does Samantha discover in season two?
APPLEGATE: We look into how she feels about love. We also look into what kind of friendships and career she wants. There are also parts of her that are now becoming a little jaded, too. It’s a very interesting and fun season.
What happens to Samantha’s love life?
APPLEGATE: During the second season, her love life is going in many different directions – but that’s part of her trying to figure out who she is. She is trying to work out which person she wants and not which person is best for her because of what someone else says. Who’s that person? I don’t know. Todd is always there. There’s so much comfort in her relationship with Todd, but I guess we’ll have to see what happens.

ABC has canceled “Samantha Who?”!!! The show will not be coming back for a third season!
ABC has canceled the Christina Applegate starrer “Samantha Who?”
ABC Studios laffer, which had been expected to return, got caught up in this year’s belt-tightening trend at the networks. According to an insider close to the show, decision to scrap “Samantha” came down to numbers. The show couldn’t slash its budget deep enough to make a third-season pickup work.
ABC had been mulling a plan to decrease “Samantha’s” budget by changing the way the show is shot — moving from single-cam to a multicamera format. Alphabet was looking to slash as much as $500,000 per episode from the show’s budget.
But “Samantha” became expendable once ABC picked up such a hefty number of series for next year — 10 in total (Daily Variety, May 18). With that large a crop of frosh series, it no longer made sense to bring “Samantha” back.
“Samantha” was initially a strong performer for the Alphabet on Monday nights in its debut season, but faltered this season after moving to Thursdays. – Variety
On the bright side, The Ausiello Files is reporting that we will see the remaining 7 episodes AND a “series” finale type episode!
Multiple sources confirm that ABC has pulled the plug on Samantha Who? after two seasons.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise considering ABC and the show’s producers appeared to be close to compromising on a cost-cutting measure that would have shifted the comedy from its current single-camera format to the more traditional (and cheaper) multi-camera model.
On the bright side, at least there will be closure: Per an ABC insider, seven unaired episodes remain in the network’s arsenal and the last one “feels like a series finale.” Of course, there’s no telling when or where those eps will be shown.
I am very disappointed in ABC – I cannot believe they would cancel such an amazing show! It was amazing not only because Christina was in it, but the entire cast was great, had great writing AND it was an original concept!
