Christina Applegate knows moms who are very hands off, and moms who are very hands on. She figures she can be both.
“I’ll probably be a little bit hippie and a little bit Type A,” the actress, 38, told PEOPLE at Tuesday’s premiere of Going the Distance in Los Angeles. “I’ll take from what my mother did, which was way hippie and like ‘Do what you wanna do,’ and bring some things that I know from watching my friends raise their kids. An amalgamation of sorts.”
Pregnant with her first child with fiancé Martyn Lenoble, Applegate says she’s been craving certain types of food – well, OK, all types of food. “Just keep going with it in my mouth,” she says.
Applegate says in general she’s been feeling good, although one aspect of pregnancy is causing a bit of stress: designing the nursery.
“It’s gender neutral because we don’t know [if it's a boy or girl],” she says. “I’m trying. It’s becoming a bigger project than it was supposed to be, unfortunately.”

When mom-to-be Christina Applegate found out that she was expecting she went into “a state of shock,” she says.
“I went numb when I found out was pregnant,” Christina tells Entertainment Weekly. “I was like, ‘Huh? How did that happen?’ I knew how it happened, of course, but I went into a state of shock for a couple of days. When I came out of it, I was really, really excited.
The Samantha Who? star says she’s enjoying her pregnancy – well, most of it.
“You’ve got this amazing creature in there and you get to see it grow on those ultrasounds. The only thing about pregnancy I don’t get: Why does the baby need your a** to get so fat?”
Another thing she’s not too crazy about is the sudden paparazzi presence in her life.
“I get so angry, I want to Sean Penn them all,” Christina admits. “I mean, really, how many pictures of my bump do they need?”
The baby on the way will be the first for Christina and her fiancé Martyn Lenoble.
Christina Applegate has said beating breast cancer motivated her to “make things happen”.
The actress underwent a double masectomy in July 2008 after being diagnosed with the disease.
“I think the urgency to have a good life is definitely a stronger element in my life now than it was before. I think I meandered, waiting for something to happen. Now I really try to make things happen right now,” she explained.
The actress, who voices the feline spy Katherine in new movie Cats & Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore, recently announced she was expecting a baby with fiance Martyn Lenoble.
Christina said humour helped her through the tough times.
“I always found (something) funny in everything I was going through, there are funny things – hospitals are funny!” she laughed.
And since recovering, the actress admitted she was learning to say “no” a lot more.
“I allow myself to get angry now, which I don’t think I ever did, to feel whatever it is you’re feeling and speak your mind,” she said. “I say ‘no’ so much now and it’s fantastic. I didn’t say ‘no’ before, I said ‘yes’ to everything.”
But the pregnant actress insisted she was saying ‘yes’ to “living life, resting and doing voice-overs for kids movies – things that will bring lots of joy to the littler folk”.
Actress Christina Applegate is set to launch her own cancer charity that will help women who can’t afford proper preventative care. Right Action For Women will offer programs to help give financial aid to high-risk women who cant afford to get MRIs. An MRI is one of the breast cancer screening tests recommended by the American Cancer Society for women at increased risk for breast cancer.
Unfortunately, many women are not undergoing genetic testing or having breast cancer screening tests because of financial burden or insurance limitations.
Applegate, a cancer survivor herself, gained an appreciation for the tremendous expenses associated with breast cancer screening and treatment during one of her many doctors visits.
“It’s unfortunate that insurance companies (in America) don’t cover the cost of that. It’s such an incredible device because you can find it at an early detection stage. We started our pilot programme and started helping women already, even though we aren’t launched.
“The other aspect of the programme is to do genetic counselling and help women understand what being high-risk means, and understanding what foods are good for their bloods and how to prevent this disease from happening. That has been my mission.”
Christina Applegate worries her dog will be jealous of her baby.
The ‘Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore’ actress – who recently announced she is expecting her first child with fiance Martyn Lenoble – can’t wait to welcome the infant into the world, but is already preparing for problems with her beloved pooch.
She told America’s OK! magazine: “I am worried about my dog. I think she is going to have problems.
“She is attached to me and at the house, there is a never a moment that she isn’t next to me so I will have to be careful when the baby comes.”
Although she is enjoying being pregnant, the 38-year-old star admits she is struggling to get to grips with her changing shape.
Pointing at her stomach, she joked: “I can’t wait to get rid of this!”
Christina also revealed she feels her wardrobe is a “disaster” now she is pregnant.
She said: “It’s a disaster! Picking something to wear is a disaster! My a*s is as big as my stomach, so nothing really fits right!
“You have to go through a lot of different styles and shapes to see what looks right on you.”
The blonde beauty has not disclosed when she is due to give birth, insisting she wants to keep the information “private”.
Yes, Christina Applegate is pregnant. But something wasn’t right when she appeared on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ (weeknights, 12:05AM ET on ABC) sporting a rather lumpy bump. Before she sat down, the actress turned her back to the audience and took a sweatshirt out from under her dress. Ah.
“It’s more exciting to see the big giant bulge,” Jimmy Kimmel agreed. “[But] there should not be a zipper in your baby.”
From there, Applegate talked about her “textbook” pregnancy: “I’m like everything that you read in the books — I’ve got it all.” That includes psychosis. “You kind of go a little cuckoo,” explained Applegate. “It’s almost out-of-body.” Almost.
