Christina Applegate: My Daughter Sadie Is ‘My Little Best Friend’

Like mother, like daughter.

Comedic actress Christina Applegate says her 2-year-old daughter Sadie Grace is developing a taste for humor already.

“I’m watching what she finds funny now,” Applegate, 41, tells PEOPLE while on the set of the Spring/Summer photoshoot for FabKids, for which she is a creative partner.

“If she sees something that she really thinks is funny, she does this crack-up on her own. It’s really awesome to see, ‘Oh wow, you’re learning what tickles you.’ It’s not influenced by anybody else, which is really a cool, new thing.”

The former Up All Night star says Sadie is talking now, and that “her language skills are incredible.”

“Sadie and I talk about what she dreamt about, we talk about what we’re going to do that day, we talk about what we did the day before, and we talk extensively about these things,” notes Applegate.

“It’s really a fun part of her development. Now she’s my little person, she’s my little best friend.”

As for balancing motherhood with work — including going back and forth to Atlanta to film Anchorman: The Legend Continues — Applegate confesses it’s bittersweet, but explains that having her own projects is a healthy part of their mother-daughter relationship.

“Once I get [to work], I get to be back in my skin again, and that’s always really good — for her too,” she explains. “I fill up in the outside world and then come home and bring her that strength.”

Christina Applegate: I’m in No Rush to Get Married

Christina Applegate may have the man and the baby, but she’s not desperate to get married!

The Up All Night star tells Life & Style that she and fiancé Martyn LeNoble are happy to be “living in sin” with their 17-month-old daughter, Sadie. “We have a child, and we’re committed to each other forever,” shared Christina, 40, at the launch event for LG’s Mega-Capacity TurboWash washer.

“Of course, we’d love to stand up in front of our friends one day and do that, but we’re in no rush.”

Christina began dating Martyn in 2008. They became engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2010. Nearly one year later, on Jan. 27, 2011, they welcomed their daughter. Christina was previously married to actor Johnathan Schaech, but the pair split after four years in Nov. 2005.

Christina Applegate Talks Parenting Baby Girl, Sadie

She used to always play the endearing bad girl, but now Christina Applegate has the parent role nailed, onscreen and off. Her “Up All Night” character, Reagan, is a cool, quirky working mom, and as Applegate told the LA Times, “It’s the closest I’ve ever been to myself in a character — the sense of humor, the baby love. It’s there.”

In fact, “both” of Applegate’s babies just had first birthdays. Onscreen Amy had an absurdly lavish party, complete with a bouncy house, after pushover dad Chris (played by Will Arnett) agreed to celebrate with the couple’s overbearing neighbors. As for Applegate’s real-life daughter, Sadie? She had a smaller event held in her honor. “I only invited people with babies, so we’ve got about 10,” the actress told Access Hollywood.

Here, she tells HuffPost Parents what she’s learned since being a mom.

The best parenting advice I ever got …
Schedule, schedule, schedule. Because of her schedule, Sadie has been sleeping twelve hours a night since she was 6 months old.

Favorite kid song …
“Zeedonk”

Favorite kid movie …
Sadie’s baby signs DVD

I get my kid to “go the f&@ to sleep” by …
Singing to her while she has her bottle in the dark but only if she is really feisty

The thing I swore I’d never say to my kid, but do is …
Don’t pick Mama’s nose.

The last lie I told my child was …
Mama’s water is all gone.

The word that best describes me as a mom is …
Patient

The one word I wish described me as a mom is …
Omnipresent

Biggest splurge on a kid item …
The carpet for her room, which eventually had to be torn out because it shed. Damn fancy carpet.

The title of my parenting memoir will be …
“How Did I Ever Live Without You?”

What is a perfect day with your child?
Walking on the beach, showing her starfish and birds and listening to the ocean.

What is your perfect day without children?
There is no perfect day without children.

Christina Applegate Dishes On Her Daughter’s First Birthday & Considering A ‘City Hall’ Wedding

Life is imitating art for new mom and “Up All Night” star Christina Applegate.

On the NBC comedy, Christina’s onscreen daughter is about to turn 1, and off screen, her daughter Sadie (with fiance Martyn LeNoble) is also about to hit the 1-year mark.

“It’s so weird how the show really does parallel my own life,” Christina told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman during a visit to the “Up All Night” set in Los Angeles on Friday. “Sadie’s going to be 1 next week, so it’s all sort of culminating at the same time.”

For her daughter’s birthday party, Christina said she and Martyn are keeping it simple as Sadie is too young to remember the fete.

“I only invited people with babies, so we’ve got about 10 babies and we’re gonna do some things for the babies,” she told Laura. “Do you remember your first birthday party? No! It’s a photo-op. There is going to be an activity that Sadie actually really enjoys, so, you know, we’ll be doing that, and that’s it. Two hours, feed them some yummy stuff … and then everybody leaves.”

Christina also said (similar to her character on the show) that her home life has become completely centered around her baby – so much so that she and her composer beau forewent purchasing birthday presents for each other this year.

“For my birthday I [told him], ‘Please, no gifts,’” she told Laura. “We both know that the other person’s working so hard — he composes all of the music for the show and he’s working his butt off, and I’m working my butt off, so we both understand. Everything’s about Sadie anyway.”

As for wedding plans (the couple became engaged in February 2010, but has yet to tie the knot), Christina said their hectic schedules are interfering with nuptials.

“Of course [we will get married], but the schedule, the way that it is — it’s just almost impossible. It really is. It’s insane,” she said. “We kind of thought about, seriously, like a city hall thing. Like just going and doing it and being done with that part of it, then having a party six months from now.”

While the actress would like to be married, she’s not concerned about their marital status as she says having a child together is stronger than a marriage document.

“For me [getting married] doesn’t add to the fact that we love each other and that we’re going to be together and that we have this incredible human that bonds us for life — literally for life,” she said. “So, I think we’re good.

Catch Christina, along with Maya Rudolph and Will Arnett, when “Up All Night” airs at its new time – Thursdays at 9:30 PM on NBC.

Christina Applegate: Having Sadie On Set Was My Priority

Night owl Christina Applegate is no match for her 9-month-old early bird Sadie Grace.

“We wrapped at two in the morning on Friday [but] Sadie doesn’t care what time you get home,” the Up All Night star, 39, said during a Monday appearance on The View.

“She’s up at 6:30, she doesn’t sleep in because you got home late!”

To offset her late-night schedule, Applegate spends her mornings with her family before heading to the set, where she’s later joined by her daughter.

“My whole thing was, ‘I’m not doing this unless I can bring her.’ So they had to build me a room for her and it’s got her toys and a crib and she takes her naps there,” the actress explains.

“That’s called a crazy mother who said, ‘No, I’m not doing anything unless I can be with my baby.’”

And with her fiancé Martyn LeNoble as the show’s musical composer, the couple find themselves longing for a date night, but too exhausted to actually leave the house.

“We’re like, ‘When did we even go anywhere, outside this house, without Sadie?’ We don’t want to anyway, we’re sort of obsessed with her,” Applegate shares.

“Every weekend we’re like, ‘We have to, we have someone who can watch her, let’s try to go out to dinner.’ But by the time it’s 6:00, we’re so tired no one wants to do anything and I just want to be in my sweatpants.”

As a first-time mom, Applegate has offered many of her own experiences as material for the show’s storyline. Scenes from the birth episode, she admits, were taken directly from her own delivery room.

“I talked to the writer and I said, ‘Look, I’m going to give you some hints: I needed a headband,’” she recalls. “It was my obsession to have a headband and it really was about my own having to have control of the situation. I would even send texts to myself, ‘Do not forget the headband. Do not forget the headband!’”

Applegate admits she also found herself vying for the doctor’s praise for her stellar pushing powers.

“I had this whole competition thing with the pushing in my own head,” she laughs. ”When I was there, I was like, ‘I’m going to be the best. I want my doctor to tell me, “I’ve never seen anyone get a baby out that fast.”‘”

One aspect of motherhood Applegate’s not so proud of? Her potty mouth, which has led to a few slips around Sadie.

“Has Sadie heard a couple of things? She has heard a couple of things, she has,” she says. ”But you know, her language back to me is, ‘Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba!’ That’s all she’s got. So right now, I’m good.”
