Christina Applegate battles ‘pregnesia’ with laughs
Written by Jennifer on August 29th, 2010

How very Kelly Bundy of her.

But don’t blame Christina Applegate for being the slightest bit scattered, like the airhead she played on the series Married With Children.

“I don’t know what I’m talking about anymore. I’m so sorry,” Applegate says, humming a tune and breaking into song. “Pregnesia. What am I talking about these days?”

Applegate, 38, has a good excuse. She is expecting her first child this winter, with musician fiancé Martyn Lenoble, and if she had her druthers, the news would have stayed private.

“I was going to wait much longer. It was announced for me. Someone at my doctor’s office — that’s where we think it came from.

“I wasn’t planning on that at all. I don’t announce things. I don’t feel that I owe anybody an announcement. That’s not how I roll,” she says. “With my breast cancer, I had known since March of that year, and it came out in the end of July. Someone saw me at the hospital, but I’d already had three surgeries by then.”

Bouncing back from adversity

It has been a tumultuous two years for the actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and had a double mastectomy. Her ABC show, Samantha Who?, was canceled in 2009 while she was recovering from reconstructive breast surgery. She says she’s cancer-free and doing well. “My tests are coming up. I get them every three months. You still hate it, no matter what. It’s still scary. But knock on wood and keep going.”

Work has always been Applegate’s reprieve. Her latest film, the comedy Going the Distance (opening Friday), pairs her with her old pal Drew Barrymore. She’s Barrymore’s controlling sister Corinne, who’s suspicious of Barrymore’s long-distance boyfriend (played by Justin Long).

“I’ve known little Drew since she was teeny, but we never worked together. We used to go to dance class together, but she was half my size. She was such a little girl then, and I was older and thought I was cool,” Applegate says. “I love Drew, and I thought, ‘Why the heck not (do the movie)?’ It’s funny. It’s a couple of weeks. I didn’t want to go away for a long time. We really had a deep bond. She and I understand the dark sides and the light sides of our growing up.”

In the comedy, Applegate’s tightly wound Corinne and her husband, Phil (Jim Gaffigan), engage in rather loud sexual shenanigans. Is Applegate prepared to answer questions about their antics and whether she and Lenoble do the same thing in real life?

“And the fact that you’re asking me that means I’m going to have to punch you,” she retorts playfully.

That’s a typical example of Applegate’s sharp, incisive humor, says Distance director Nanette Burstein.

“She’s a very strong woman. If she were to yell at you, you’d be terrified,” Burstein says. “She commands this confidence that is both admirable and intimidating. (And) she’s inherently funny. ”

Her home is her sanctuary

And she’s private. Applegate lives in the Hollywood Hills, in an old-school mansion she bought 15 years ago and now shares with her fiancé, who is the bassist for Porno for Pyros, their rescue dog, Tallulah, whom Applegate found roaming in her neighborhood, and cat Bella, who was born in a Dumpster. Her home is a blend of modern and relaxed: off-white sectional sofas in her sunken living room, Diane Arbus’ Revelations book placed on three clear plexiglass stacked coffee tables, and a sleek bar in the corner.

“This house, for some reason, was really cheap. I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “It’s tripled in value. It’s a good thing. I love being here. I’ll probably always be here.”

Applegate is barefoot, her face free of makeup, her demeanor warm, laid-back and self-deprecating. Like so many pregnant women, her conversation always meanders back to the child she is carrying. Applegate has no acting work lined up and isn’t yet planning a wedding, but says she’ll keep busy by decorating her baby’s nursery.

“I need something to do. I’m so bored. No one is jumping at the chance to hire a big pregnant person. We’re on a forced hiatus from everything,” she says. “There won’t be any pastels in that baby’s nursery. It will be very modern. It’s something they have to grow into.”

The actress, who knows her baby’s gender but won’t reveal it, recently downloaded a baby names application for her iPad.

“That wasted at least an hour or two of my time,” she quips. “Now, what do I do?”

LA Times Interview at “Going The Distance” Premiere

Christina Applegate, who plays the sister of Drew’s character in the movie, said the two were …
…nothing but professional on set.

“I mean, they’re really good friends,” the actress said. “But at the end of the day, they’re both professionals, and I wouldn’t know if they had ever been together or not, because kind of I think they would [have chemistry] regardless.”

Applegate, who recently got engaged and is also pregnant, stood teetering in a pair of high heels which she said she was yearning to take off.

“I love that all these things are happening–I’m really happy for Drew and Justin and everybody, but I’m telling you, I cannot wait for all of this to be done,” she admitted. “I can’t wait for Friday when I don’t have to be this person for just a minute. Because being pregnant and doing all this is a little bit of work.”

Christina Applegate to Be World’s First Hippie, Type-A Mom
Written by Jennifer on August 24th, 2010

Christina Applegate knows moms who are very hands off, and moms who are very hands on. She figures she can be both.

“I’ll probably be a little bit hippie and a little bit Type A,” the actress, 38, told PEOPLE at Tuesday’s premiere of Going the Distance in Los Angeles. “I’ll take from what my mother did, which was way hippie and like ‘Do what you wanna do,’ and bring some things that I know from watching my friends raise their kids. An amalgamation of sorts.”

Pregnant with her first child with fiancé Martyn Lenoble, Applegate says she’s been craving certain types of food – well, OK, all types of food. “Just keep going with it in my mouth,” she says.

Applegate says in general she’s been feeling good, although one aspect of pregnancy is causing a bit of stress: designing the nursery.

“It’s gender neutral because we don’t know [if it's a boy or girl],” she says. “I’m trying. It’s becoming a bigger project than it was supposed to be, unfortunately.”

“Going The Distance” Premiere Coverage
Written by Jennifer on August 24th, 2010

A summer fling turns into a long-distance love affair in the romantic comedy, “Going the Distance.”

Most romantic comedies are rated “PG” or “PG-13,” but not this one.

“Mostly everything I say in this, you can’t show,” says one of the film’s stars, Christina Applegate, at the film’s Hollywood premiere Monday.

Applegate’s moments in the movie are too racy for TV.

“We were acting out a campaign for Cialis,” says the film’s other star, Drew Barrymore.

“Going the Distance” goes where most romantic comedies do not: into the R-rated arena.

The actors give us something that we’re not used to getting at the box office.

“That’s exactly what our intention was with this film,” Barrymore says. “It was to give a romantic comedy that’s more real and more adult and not sort of based in a fairy tale setting, even though I love those movies.”

The film opens Sept. 3.
